The Source 07:34

about

Effra’s namesake, the subterranean river Effra which flows into the Thames underneath MI6, inspired the theme of their second album Below Ground. The band managed to track down its source in the hills of what, in yesteryear, was famously known as the Great North Wood. A recording of its rushing waters can be heard on ‘The Source’ and other underground sounds, such as the sound of the Docklands Light Railway as it makes its way underneath the Thames, also feature on the record.
Staying with their theme, the band took a trip one summer’s day to explore the abandoned workings of Box Freestone Mine. The eerie silence of this lonely place soon inspired more music and soon they were jamming away in a side chamber; the results of which can be heard at the end of the track ‘Bruntsfield’. Aptly, Below Ground’s cover captures the trio in the midst of unearthing another musical gem in the depths of the mine.
Back on the surface the band wrote a few less hypogean tunes and some stand in direct contrast to their buried counterparts. ‘The Loft’ has lofty ideals whilst ‘Cadman’s Rest’ commemorates the 18th century steeplejack and showman John Cadman who plummeted to his death whilst attempting to slide down a rope from the spire of St. Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury, across the River Severn to the Gay Meadow beyond.
Wherever you find yourself: on the ground, above it or below it, find some time to enjoy these musical offerings and, if you feel the urge to venture into the deeps, wear a helmet!
